Simon Cowell Reunites with Kelly Clarkson at the Billboard Music Awards: ‘I’m Very Proud of You’

gerald May 20, 2018

Kelly Clarkson and Simon Cowell enjoyed an impromptu American Idol reunion Sunday night at the Billboard Music Awards.

After the pop star, 36, performed her new song “Whole Lotta Woman,”she shared a sweet embrace with Cowell, 58, onstage.

“That was bloody fantastic. What can I say?” the former American Idol judge — who was at the show to introduce Camila Cabello’s performance — said of Clarkson’s show-stopping set. “I’m very proud of you.”

Check out PEOPLE’s full Billboard Music Awards coverage to get the latest news on music’s big night.

Clarkson and Cowell, of course, first met on American Idol back in 2002, when Clarkson bested Justin Guarini for the season one title.

Cowell left American Idol in 2010 and launched the U.S. iteration of The X Factor, on which he discovered Cabello when he assembled the girl group Fifth Harmony.

Clarkson — who attended the show with her husband Brandon Blackstock and step-daughter Savannah — was on double duty Sunday at the Billboard Music Awards, where she hosted in addition to performing.

Since she appeared on American Idol 16 years ago, Clarkson has become one of the most successful artists in mainstream music. She’s released seven full-length albums and a holiday record, as well as a greatest hits compilation. And these days, the Grammy winner sits behind the judge’s table, as she’s a coach on NBC’s The Voice.

After 15 seasons airing on Fox, American Idol ended in 2015. However, ABC revived the talent competition earlier this year, and it was recently renewed for another season. The season 16 finale airs Monday on ABC.

V, Jungkook, Jimin, Suga, Jin, RM (Rap Monster) and J-Hope took to the stage in their denim looks — including harnesses! — to impress their screaming, crying fans who traveled from all parts of the world to see them perform. To announce the performance, host Kelly Clarkson first put on a pair of pink headphones to block out the undying screams from the crowd. But which artist are they dreaming of joining forces with for new music?

Janet Jackson graced the Billboard Music Awards stage to receive the prestigious Icon Award on Sunday in Las Vegas. Not only was the moment her first television performance in nine years, but it was also the first time she has performed as a mom.

Bruno Mars surprised fans taking the stage to introduce Jackson. He rattled off her accolades and following a moving montage of her life and career — from the Jackson family’s humble beginnings in Gary, Indiana to her global chart-topping success—  he ended his intro naming her “the first black woman to ever receive the Billboard Icon Award.”

Jackson hit the stage in a sparkling gold sweatshirt dress and shiny gold thigh-high shoes as she sang her 1986 hit “Nasty,” as her mother Katherine and other family members, including nephew Prince Michael, beamed from the audience. Jackson launched into her 1993 song “Throb”, everyone from Tyra Banks to Ciara couldn’t help but sing and dance along.

As for dancers, there were many! Those rocking the stage included Phillip Galbert, 28, of New Britain, Connecticut, and La’Vala “Lala” Moss, 26, of Birmingham, Alabama, who recently received the news that they’d been chosen out of 75,000 hopefuls as winners of Jackson’s global #DanceWithJanet competition. PEOPLE broke the news that not only did they get to join her JTribe, but they would be taking the stage to perform with her at the award show.

After the electrifying production, that left the audience chanting “Janet! Janet!” Jackson shared heartfelt words in her acceptance speech.

“I’m deeply humbled and grateful for this award. I believe that for all the challenges, all of our challenges, we live a great moment in history. It’s a moment that at long last women have made it clear that we will not be controlled, manipulated or abused.” Jackson, whose brother Randy opened up to PEOPLE in September about her painful divorce, told the audience, “I stand with those women and those men.”

She continued with a message on faith. “Our public discourse is loud and harsh. My prayer is that weary of such noise, we will turn back to the source of all calmness, that source is God. Everything we lack, God has in abundance: compassion, sensitivity, patience and boundless love. Again I want to thank all of you for this honor and I thank God for giving me the precious energy that lets me live my life as an artist who every day seeks to expand my capacity to love.”

Jackson, who has garnered a total of 18 BBMA nominations and 10 wins, joins a group of iconic winners including Neil Diamond (2011), Stevie Wonder (2012), Prince (2013), Jennifer Lopez (2014), Céline Dion (2016) and Cher (2017).

Nikki Bella Felt ‘Off’ After Getting Engaged to John Cena: ‘I Just Know Deep Down I Want a Baby’

gerald

The cracks in Nikki Bella and John Cena‘s relationship begin to show on the season 2 premiere of Total Bellas.

In the episode, which airs May 20, Nikki continues to struggle with her desire to be a mom, despite Cena’s clear stance against having children.

While playing with sister Brie‘s daughter Birdie, Nikki admits that she never thought she could have such a strong “connection with a baby.”

“I just look at Birdie’s face and never thought I could have this connection with a baby,” Nikki says during an on-camera interview with Brie. “I want to give her everything and make sure she has the greatest life. I’ve never felt that unconditional love.”

Brie then suggests that perhaps her bond with Birdie is a sign.

“Or Birdie is placed here on this planet to let you know you can have a connection like that with your own,” she says.

Later in the episode, Brie asks Nikki if seeing Birdie grow up makes her regret her decision to give up having kids for Cena.

“I was like 100 percent okay not being a mom but Birdie just gets cuter by the day,” says Nikki, adding that she tried to bring up the subject of having kids again to Cena, but he said, “absolutely not.”

“It’s such a load of s—,” Brie says during an interview segment. “Nicole, what the f— are you doing? There’s someone out there who will marry you and give you babies. Someplace in your heart you have to be like, ‘I love you, you’re a great man, you’re just not for me.’”

The issue mounts during the second episode of the season at an engagement party, when Nikki’s sister-in-law announces her second pregnancy.

“I am so happy for my brother and his wife, it’s just hard to not be affected when everyone around you is having not only one baby, they’re having more,” says Nikki. “They’re having families. I just know deep down I want a baby. I want to be a mom, and I feel like I can’t live the rest of my life not having one.”

Nikki admits that she’s felt “off” since getting engaged because once they are married, it will be official that she won’t ever have a baby.

When she sits down to once again discuss her struggling over giving up having kids with Cena, she begins to cry.

“I would never force you to be a dad,” she says to Cena.

He replies. “I would never force you to become a mom … I told you so many times this would happen … I’m not sure we should go through with this.”

Total Bellas returns this fall, and season 3 of Total Bellas premieres May 20 at 9 p.m. ET, both on E!

The Dancing with the Stars alum called off the engagement three weeks before she and Cena, 40, were meant to walk down the aisle.

The wedding would’ve occurred over a year after Cena proposed to Bella on live TV during WrestleMania 33 in April 2017. And there was even a TV special planned about their wedding set to air in July, but the concept was scrapped after they split after six years together.

Bay-Buh! Zedd and Maren Morris Perform ‘The Middle’ at the Billboard Music Awards

gerald

Bay-buh!

Zedd, Maren Morris and deejay-producer duo Grey performed their smash hit “The Middle” at the Billboard Music Awards Sunday night in Las Vegas.

Confetti rained from the rafters of the MGM Grand Arena as Morris led the crowd — including Halsey and Derek Hough — in a star-studded singalong of the soulful track before the audience rose in a standing ovation.

Morris — who took him the prize for top country female artist — teased the performance on Instagram in the days ahead of the show, writing: “We’re pulling out the stops with this one.”

The electronic dance music collaboration dropped the week before the Grammys in January and served as a departure for 28-year-old Morris, a country darling whose debut album HERO — featuring the hits “My Church,” “80s Mercedes” and “I Could Use a Love Song” — earned her multiple Grammy nominations.

“Zedd reached out a few months ago and sent the song, and I obviously gravitated towards it; it’s such a banger!” Morris told PEOPLE at the time. “And so I would have been crazy not to record it, and I just felt really connected to it. It all happened pretty quickly.”

And the Grammy winner wasn’t nervous to hop on the genre-blending project.

“I love what Zedd does. I mean, oh my gosh, every song that he releases is a huge smash; I listen to everything,” she said. “It didn’t feel like it was that much of a departure. And I think out of all the country artists, I’m certainly a genre-blender — so it wasn’t the biggest shock. But it still was cool to see the fans be like, ‘Oh my God, Zedd, Grey and Maren!’ It was cool. I’m glad it’s all happening.”

Morris — who married singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd in March — won the top country female artist trophy at the 2018 BBMAs, where she nominated alongside Kelsea Ballerini and Miranda Lambert.
