After the first wave of podcasting shows in 2016, we experienced a bit of a lull. There were no great shows and the few ones that had already found themselves audiences (Submarine and a Roach, We Just Got Back and Now’O’ Clock’ had all fallen into gluts of cyclical, unimaginative content. However in 2017, we’ve seen a steady stream of new players take on the ‘millennials in a room’ style of podcasting hoping to stumble on the magic formula that would make them as big as African American podcasting pioneers Kid Fury and Crissles hit show “The Read”, and now we might have to add RADR.
The results have been eh (Middleground podcast by M.I Abaga, produced by Wendy Akomolafe), unimaginative (I said what I said) and downright terrible (the rapid fire, stream of consciousness jibberish that is 2Girls1Guy). So yeah, it hasn’t been a great year for podcasting in Nigeria. But Fifo Adebakin’s youth oriented site RADR, is taking on the challenge with a new podcast they call ‘The Roundtable’, hosted by Yinka Yomi Joseph and Bolu Ayeye. From the get-go, it’s obvious the guys behind this podcast need to figure the out the sound, because you can barely either guy even when they’re speaking out. On the plus size, they don’t bother to waste precious time trying to convince they’re ‘real people’ with inane sidetalk.
Thank you God.
It’s just the first episode so we’re not going to pronounce judgement yet, but we’re not jumping out of our seats in excitement.
