The EndSARS campaign which started trending on the social media on Saturday December 2, 2017 has received the attention of foremost human rights group, The Amnesty International.
The campaign was ignited by a message from the Nigerian Police on Twitter through its police public relations and response unit educating Nigerians on how to report any erring officer of the Special anti Robbery squad (SARS) of professional misconduct. The very visual proclamation was met with a strong rebuttal from Nigerians that didn’t find it interesting which prompted the #EndSARS campaign.
While speaking to cable Newspapers yesterday, December 3, 2017, Amnesty International spokesman Isa Sanusi said, Since Nigerians are now complaining, it is an opportunity for the government to do the right thing and listen to citizen’s complaints about SARS which is supposed to be protecting people but ended up creating fear and unleashing violence on suspects. Now that Nigerians are also joining us in calling for an end to torture, the government should consider implementing our recommendations.
“The outcry shows the government did not act on our work which we did years ago. We are calling on government to listen to the cries of citizens and address these issues.”
As expected the police hierarchy has put out an incredulous statement where it describes the conduct of SARS as “fantastically well”. However the jury is out and the result is an indictment of the police unit.
Recently WISPI named our police force the worst in the world, and after vehement denials by the police force public relations unit, the #EndSARS hashtag and out pouring proves once and for all that they were right all along.
They go about with guns, they don’t wear uniform, no patrol vehicles, sometimes they use commercial buses or motorcycles to carry out their activities. The agency that was established to fight armed robbery and later kidnapping is now famous for arresting Cyber Crime suspects popularly known as “yahoo boys”
The EndSARS campaign is an avenue for the police to reform that abused police unit and save Nigerians from their nefarious activities.
